By: Monica Jones When embarking on a solo adventure to Mexico City there are a few things you should do beforehand and throughout to maximize your fun while playing it safe. Before my trip I decided to do extensive research about the culture of Mexico and that helped finalize my decision of where I wanted to sightsee, dine, and stay. Just a heads up if you’re looking for the Instagram worthy beaches and resorts you’ve purchased a ticket to the wrong city in Mexico. Mexico City, a true beauty in its own right is colorful, historical, and is the heart and soul of Mexico. In each of the colonias of Mexico City you can find something intriguing that speaks to the beauty of the Mexican capital. If you’re traveling alone you’ll want to plan ahead to make sure you get the most out of your experience because there is so much that awaits you. MJ MJ’s Must See & Do’s: Mexico City Colonias: Roma Norte- This area is modern complete with beautiful homes and architecture. Condesa- Just imagine being transplanted in a mini New York City when you arrive. You can truly spend the day here. San Angel: The hidden gem of Mexico City is your go to for shopping and upscale dining. Food & Drink: Chilaquiles- Because breakfast is the best meal of the day in Mexico City. Mezcal- If you take pleasure in throwing back Tequila shots you’ll have no problem welcoming it’s older brother into your life. (Tip: Ask for a orange slice to pair with it) Tacos- This is a must. The best tacos are believed to be in the Coyocan. Attractions: Frida & Diego Casa de Museo – You can’t visit Mexico City and not visit the home of two of the world’s most popular artists. El Sabado Bazaar- Start your Saturday off at the market and eat brunch at one of the area restaurants. Zocalo Square- No trip to Mexico City is complete without a visit to the central point of all things celebratory for Mexican natives. The center and soul of the city. Mexico City is the perfect getaway to explore because there is so much to see and do. You’ll need at least 5 days or more to truly enjoy it all. If you are traveling solo be sure to always rely on Uber it’s the safest and most affordable way to travel; most of my trips were under $7USD from my hotel which was nested in San Angel. Currency can be exchanged upon your arrival to Mexico be aware of the exchange rates and be sure to find an exchange desk with fair conversion rates typically located outside of the baggage claim area. Lastly, be sure to be gracious with gratuity because the U.S. dollar goes a long way in Mexico. Whether traveling alone or with a group Mexico City is your destination for a one-of a- kind experience of culture and delicious authentic cuisine. Interesting Facts about Mexico City: Most of Mexico City’s more than 150 museums can be visited from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm, although some of them have extended schedules, such as the Museum of Anthropology and History, which is open to 7 pm. In addition to this, entrance to most museums are free on Sunday. Mexico City is one of the most important economic hubs in Latin America. According to a study conducted by PwC, Mexico City had a GDP of $390 billion, ranking it as the eighth richest city in the world and the richest in Latin America. The 2009 estimated population for the city proper was approximately 8.84 million people, with a land area of 1,485 square kilometers (573 sq. mi). According to the most recent definition agreed upon by the federal and state governments, the Greater Mexico City population is 21.3 million people, making it the largest metropolitan of the Western Hemisphere, the tenth-largest agglomeration, and the largest Spanish-speaking city in the world.
